Great North Run

In 2016 #TeamStOswald was the biggest ever, with almost 400 runners supporting us. Help us make Great North Run 2017 even bigger!

We would love you to be part of our amazing team for the Great North Run 2017. With over 57,000 runners, places for this half marathon fill very fast, so don't miss out!

Be part of our team for the largest half marathon in the world. If you’re a seasoned runner for St Oswald’s or about to do your first Great North Run ever, we will support you all the way. The 13.1 mile course starting in Newcastle upon Tyne will take you pass iconic buildings and a scenic route before ending in South Shields. Originating in 1981 where 12,000 runners had participated in the first Great North Run, the half marathon has grown significantly to attract 54,000 participants by 2011. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary this year, we are hoping to have our biggest ever Great North Run team to date.

You will receive a St Oswald’s Hospice branded running vest to wear on the day of the run along with a fundraising pack.

As a member of St Oswald's Hospice team, you will receive:

  • A fundraising pack, full of ideas and tips to help you reach your fundraising goal
  • A free #TeamStOswalds running vest
  • Regular newsletters with training tips, information about training sessions, news and updates
  • Access to St Oswald's Hospice tent after the run, where there will be access to massage tables, refreshments, and the warmest and wholehearted of welcomes from our fantastic volunteers!
  • Anyone aged 17 and over with the appropriate level of fitness can be a part of the team.

  • Are you a member of a school, youth group or are you a parent or guardian?

Get your kids involved in a great day of athletics on the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside and raise money for St Oswald’s Hospice.

The Junior Great North Run is open to runners aged 9-16 years. The 4km course will take competitors from the Newcastle side of the quayside, across the swing bridge, looping along the river before returning to the Newcastle for the big finish. After crossing the finish line all runners will received a well-deserved goodie bag, t-shirt and that all important medal.

For this run St Oswald’s is happy to pay the £15 entry fee, we ask in return all runners aim to raise £50 towards the care and support of our patients and their families.

Please bear in mind, the Junior Great North run does not permit accompanying adults to run in the race, with the exception of special circumstances.

The Mini Great North Run is open to little runners aged 3-8 years old. The course will take the tots from Newcastle Quayside, over the swing bridge and finally a spectacular finish over the Millennium Bridge. Waiting for all brave runners at the finish line is a wonderful goodie bag, T-shirt and the all-important finishers medal.

All little runners will be required to run with an accompanying adult.

If you are interested in signing your child to the Junior or Mini Great North Run 2018 please email your contact details to susanhollyman@stoswaldsuk.org

  • The Great North Run is part of our Silver Life List challenges, this means we ask that you set yourself a fundraising target of £300.

This money will return to the hospice directly, to help patients and families from across the North East. It will also be used to maintain the care services provided by the hospice for the past 30 years. As we look to the future we hope to continue to be a major support system for our local communities.

Our nurses work hard 24 hours a day, providing exceptional care to support the Hospice. Raising £100 can provide 5 hours of nursing care for the patients, children and families at St Oswald’s.
