A Northumberland tradition raised money for St Oswald's

We were delighted to be chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the long running and much loved Ponteland Wheelbarrow Races, which took place on New Year’s Day morning around St Mary’s Parish Church in the village centre – as has been customary since the early 14th century.

Organised by the Ponteland 41 Club and Ponteland Rugby Club, both of whom supply the wheelbarrows to ensure an even playing field, the race dates back to the early 1300s when the Lord of the Manor encouraged residents to scour the countryside to survive a particularly harsh winter.

Despite the improvement in living conditions since the scavenging, the event continues to be one of Ponteland’s biggest social occasions each year with teams of two taking to wheelbarrows to battle it out over the mile-long course which starts and ends at the Blackbird Inn. A familiar face from St Oswald’s was competing in the race – our Chef, Dave Taylor and his kitchen sink, with game supporter Clare as his wheelbarrow riding partner! Well done Team St Oswald’s!

A fantastic £1100 was raised for the hospice. Thank you to everyone who took part or made a donation towards the event.
