Our Lantern Walk takes place in just over seven weeks, and is the perfect way to remember the lives of loved ones no longer with us. Last year, hundreds of local people joined us on a 5km walk as the sun set, carrying lanterns to light the way. Each lantern shone brightly in memory of a special person.
This year, we invite you to sign up and walk with us again, this time at The Rising Sun Country Park on Saturday 1st July, from 7.30pm. The event, sponsored by WeightWatchers and in partnership with Smooth Radio is open to anyone aged 12 and over, and participants will receive a coloured lantern, tea light, t shirt to wear during the walk and fundraising pack.
The event will be hosted by Smooth Radio’s Breakfast Show presenter Steve Colman, with entertainment and a warm up before the walk begins.
Walkers will be encouraged to share a special photo or message on our memory wall at the event, or they can email us with a photo of their loved one before the event, which will be added to our Online Memory Wall.
The Lantern Walk is raising funds for St Oswald’s Hospice, and we are encouraging all walkers to aim to raise £100 in sponsorship towards our vital work with local adults, young people and children. For each £100 raised, we can provide five hours of specialist nursing care to a patient and their families, at a difficult time.
Suzanne Graves, from Cramlington, is taking part in the Lantern Walk in memory of her Mam, Joan, who spent three weeks on St Oswald’s Inpatient Unit before she died in 2015. Suzanne will be walking in memory of her Mam with her husband, Keith.
“I’m taking part in the Lantern Walk because the care my Mam received at the Hospice was so important, she had been in hospital for several months and when we were told about St Oswald’s we felt it would be a good place for her to go to spend her last few weeks.
“My mam was on the inpatient unit for three weeks and it was then I realised how much money St Oswald’s have to raise to keep their services open and I wanted to do something to give back. Running the Great North Run or anything like that isn’t for me so the walk seemed like the perfect thing to do.”
If you would like to join Suzanne and hundreds of others by remembering someone in this way, you can sign up now! Visit our Lantern Walk page or call us on 0191 246 9123. Registration costs £15 for ages 16 and over and £10 for those aged 12-15. Registration free includes lantern, tea light, t shirt and fundraising pack.
