The first ever Sunderland St Oswald’s charity shop is celebrating a year of success by hosting a special ‘Buy the Bag’ promotional event to say thank you to shoppers for helping to raise money for our Children’s Hospice.
The event, which will run in-store from Monday 10 to Saturday 15 April* promises even more bargains for local people and families to make life affordable.
By buying a bag for a set price, customers can try a charity shop experience with a difference and fill up on their finds, all while generating further funds for our Children and Young Adults Service.
All profits from the shop directly contribute towards the work of our Children’s Hospice, which provides free-of-charge care for youngsters with life-limiting conditions, and their families from across Sunderland, South Tyneside, Durham, Northumberland, North Tyneside, Gateshead and Newcastle.
Inspired by our concept store, Buy the Bag in Newcastle, the first-of-its-kind promotion for the Sunderland shop gives customers two options: either a small bag, priced at £5.00 allowing up to seven items, or a large bag offering up to 15 items for £10.00.
With a wide selection of good quality pre-loved products available, visitors can choose from children’s, women’s and men’s clothing, accessories, toys and books, furniture and homewares, plus much more.
Meanwhile, those who enjoy a treasure hunt can expect quirky discoveries and collectable items, from vinyl records to fine bone china. Since opening, the shop has become a magnet for interesting donations, with previous items including rare military antiques from the 1800s, and an official Team GB uniform from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics made by Aquascutum.
St Oswald’s Sunderland shop manager, Charlotte Worley said:
We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated to the shop, and to our regular customers for their ongoing support - we hope they’ll enjoy the Buy the Bag promotion and various bargains we have on offer to mark our first year in Sunderland. With a fantastic mix of stock to choose from, ranging from Ugg boots and Chanel perfume to top-of-the-range prams and soft cuddly toys and a whole lot more, there really is something for everyone so we’d love to see the promotion encourage new visitors to the shop, too.
After launching to Wearsiders on High Street West last April, the Sunderland store’s popularity has grown so much its opening times have now extended to a six-day week.
Now the shop is urging locals to consider joining its volunteer team to help meet the increase in demand from Sunderland shoppers.
We’re lucky to have a small group of loyal, hard-working volunteers who give as much time as they can afford but we’re struggling to find cover during the afternoon shift, even just for a couple of hours, and if we don’t have enough volunteers, we can’t open the shop. We have volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, from college students to the recently retired, and many have been with us since we first opened.
One such volunteer is 58-year-old Steve Burke, from Pallion who alongside wife, Susan enjoys giving any spare time he has to volunteering in the shop. He said:
I like interacting with people and the shop team and customers make it a very social, fun experience every day. It’s good to know what I’m doing is helping someone else, too. I love it and if anyone is thinking about giving even just an hour of their time, whenever they can I’d say just go for it. Volunteering is the best thing I’ve ever done.
Open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 – 16:30 (closed on Bank Holidays), St Oswald's Sunderland charity shop can be found opposite the entrance to Primark at 59 High Street West.
