The 2017 Pavel Cup will kick off in style next week as St Oswald’s Dunston Furniture shop is unveiling its dedicated window display to shoppers.
The Pavel Cup, which was first launched last year, is a charity football match held in honour of former footballer Pavel Srnicek, who died in December 2015. As St Oswald’s was a charity close to Pavel and his family, it was agreed that any money raised at the match would be donated to St Oswald’s.
This year, event organisers have decided to up-the-ante by remembering the life of another former footballer, Chris ‘hitman’ Heron, by holding a special match. The game will see a special Pavel Srnicek squad go up against Felling FC Old Boys. Those who have confirmed their attendance so far include; former Newcastle United stars Steve Harper, Steve Howey, Darren Peacock, Jamie McClen, and Paul Robinson, comedian Gavin Webster, Britain’s Got Talent finalist Danny Posthill, and the Evening Chronicle’s Lee Ryder. Some more big names are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Ahead of the game, St Oswald’s Dunston shop will be hosting a special morning on Thursday 25th May to launch the cup. Those attending will be treated to an unveiling of a special Pavel Cup themed window display, as well as refreshments, the chance to win prizes in a tombola and to enter an auction to win an NUFC signed football.
Footballer Steve Howey and event organiser Steve Wraith recently popped into our Dunston store to meet the team, pose for pictures and help with the preparation for the big day.
Steve Howey told us:
The Pavel Cup is extremely precious to us as it is a chance for us to keep Pavel’s memory alive by reminding everyone how special and talented he was. The game truly does bring the whole community together and last year was such a huge success, that it gave us confidence that the Pavel Cup had the potential to grow and grow. Many people who attended last year weren’t massive football fans, but came just to support the event as the day has such a nice and friendly atmosphere. To be able to honour Pavel by holding a special game in his honour each year whilst raising money for a superb local charity is a tradition we hope to continue to build on.
Siobhan Sargeant, Corporate Fundraiser at St Oswald's, said:
The Pavel Cup was a huge success last year and we want to emulate that at the 2017 match. Despite last year being the first time that The Pavel Cup was hosted, the event attracted over 1,000 people and more than £5,000 was raised for St Oswald’s. As such, we’re warming up this year with a special launch, courtesy of our very own shop in Dunston. On Thursday 25th May, we want to thank everyone involved, including the event organisers and the other St Oswald’s charity shops, for generously helping with our preparations.
The unveiling will be held at 11am at the Dunston Furniture Store, 13/16 Ellison Road, Dunston, NE11 9SS on Thursday 25th May.
