We’ve been working with our partners at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to deliver our new Ambulatory Care Service, which used to be provided in a busy hospital
The service sees patients with progressive, life-limiting conditions coming to us during the day for regular treatments such as infusions and transfusions, creating capacity within one of our local hospitals. This is vital support to the NHS, especially as we approach the winter months.
David, 84, lives in Gosforth and has been using the service for six months for fortnightly blood transfusions which he had previously received at the Freeman Hospital
“The comfort factor at the Hospice is excellent. Being cared for in a domestic-type setting is very reassuring, the staff have plenty of time for you and the atmosphere is relaxed. Having doctors and physios on hand for advice is a huge benefit as I know someone is here if I need them, even if my concern isn’t about the condition I’m here for.”
Tom, 69, is from Denton Burn and attends St Oswald’s Hospice as a day patient for blood transfusions every three weeks
He relies on the comfort and convenience of being able to come to the Hospice for this essential treatment, but also benefits from the social aspect.
“At the Hospice I can relax and the nurses have time to chat. I have my lunch here and can get a neck or foot massage which is a nice treat! It’s a brilliant service and I am really grateful to be able to come. I feel safe and the care is excellent. As I live alone, I enjoy the company and talking to the other patients and staff. It really is a lifeline for me.”
