Meet our Hospice Management Team

Our Hospice Management Team (HMT) oversee the day-to-day running of St Oswald's. The Team is made up of our Chief Executive and Directors. They meet regularly to discuss and decide on strategic issues.

Our Chief Executive, with support from HMT colleagues, reports to our Board of Trustees, which approves major decisions and has overall responsibility for the Hospice's activities and direction.

Simon Gordon

Director of Strategy and Development

Simon has a successful history of service delivery and development within complex healthcare organisations.

In 2016, he became the Director of Strategy and Development at the hospice. His remit covers strategy, research, technology and business intelligence.

Simon also serves as the Chairperson of the active partnership charity, Rise. He also serves on the Newcastle PSRC Polypharmacy Theme Implementation and Management Group.

Previously, Simon was Chief Executive of a visual impairment charity, Director of a national healthcare consultancy and a Senior Projects Manager/New Business lead for a national healthcare charity.

He has co-authored service specifications adopted as best practices by both the Royal Colleges of General Practitioners and Nursing, and has developed primary and secondary care strategies for clinical commissioning groups and acute trusts across England.

Steph Edusei

Steph joined St Oswald’s Hospice as Chief Executive in May 2020. Steph has a wealth of experience in senior roles in the local NHS, including managing hospital and ambulance services, CCG commissioning and Healthwatch services. This not only brings leadership experience within the local care sector, but also exposure to the wider system of the NHS in the North East.

Steph sits on a range of health and wellbeing boards in Gateshead, and contributes to system-wide developments across the region. Steph is a Director of the North East England Chamber of Commerce, and recently ended her tenure as Non-Executive Director of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Steph is an integral part of her local community. She has been a leader with Girlguiding UK for over three decades and holds the position of Chair at the Eliot Smith Dance Company. Steph has also served as co-chair of The Angelou Centre. Steph is the founder of the ‘Black All Year’ podcast and associated events where she uses the platform to amplify black voices.

Sarah Peart

Director of People

Sarah was appointed Director of People at St Oswald’s Hospice in November 2023. She has more than 18 years of Human Resources (HR) experience spanning the retail, manufacturing, and charity sectors. Sarah is also a member of multiple professional institutes and has a Masters in HR Management, a NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health and a Certificate in Employment Law in practice.

In her previous role, at Children North East, Sarah was responsible for the charity’s HR systems, policies and strategies and was the designated Health, Safety and Facilities Lead. She has also held HR and health and safety positions at Lear Corporation and Johnson Controls Automotive Ltd.

Sarah previously volunteered at St Oswald’s Hospice serving refreshments to Inpatients and helping to prepare Sunday lunches.

Angela Egdell

Director of Care Services

Angela is a Registered Nurse and has worked at St Oswald's since it opened in 1986, originally as a staff nurse on the Adult Unit and within the Lymphoedema Service. As Director of Care Services, Angela oversees the Adult Inpatient Unit, Day Services and the Children and Young Adults Service. She is the Registered Manager for Care Standards Commission and Accountable Officer for Controlled drugs. She manages all clinical staff across the services including Nurses, Doctors, Physio, OT, Social Workers, Spiritual support and Bereavement support. She is a member of the Hospice Senior Management Team who along with the CEO have responsibility for the strategic direction of the Hospice.

Anita Ball

Director of Income and Marketing

Anita has over 20 years' experience working in the voluntary sector in income generation and communication positions. Her strengths are in people management, strategic and business development. Anita has successfully united all income generating activities at the Hospice and developed a cohesive strategy that has seen rapid growth and development. New initiatives include the emergence of social enterprise models and expansion and maximisation of income streams.

Kathryn Maclaren ACMA, CGMA

Director of Finance

Kathryn began working at St Oswald’s in February 2018. Kathryn is responsible for overseeing the overall financial management of the Hospice. Kathryn qualified as an accountant whilst working in the industry in 2007. Prior to joining St Oswald’s, Kathryn has held financial roles within the NHS and then a regional charity and has gained over 10 years’ experience in financial management in the not for profit sector. Kathryn has a strong interest in developing financial models for projects, budgeting and forecasting and charity VAT.
