Green Acres partnership is looking to a sustainable future

Green Acres Future Ltd are a family farming business going back generations around Morpeth in Northumberland, having always been mixed farmers, having cattle, sheep and arable crops.

Green Acres is a 70 acre plot of land in Morpeth, offering plots to local individuals and businesses, as a mean to off-set their carbon production, where they can enjoy being part of something visible, local and visually improving our environment.

Traditionally, crop rotations were used more than artificial inputs (fertiliser and sprays), to ensure the soil had the required nutrients for the arable crops, but in the last 30 to 40 years those rotations have fallen out of fashion and the levels of artificial inputs have risen. You don’t see as many veg crops, turnips with sheep on, grasses etc these days, but you do see huge tractors and machines in the fields applying the necessary inputs. There is a theory that in a few years the soil will become unproductive, as it’s been overworked and is ‘empty’.

With this potential issue on the horizon, Green Acres are interested in seeing how the soil and wildlife regenerates using natural means, and have adapted their farm to explore this. They are applying environmental procedures right across our farm, but are devoting a set 70 acre site in its entirety to organic, environmental improvement……this is where the idea for Green Acres was born!

As sustainability is very important to us as a hospice and a business, we’re thrilled to announce our partnership with Green Acres. Their founders Matt and Mike are personal supporters of the Hospice, and are looking to support us in the following ways;

  1. Donating 5% of their sales revenue from their green packages and solutions
  2. Donating 10% of their sales revenue from their shop and memorial tree gifts
  3. Offering a 20% discount on all their products and services to friends, family, employees, and fellow supporters of the hospice
  4. Creating a dedicated St Oswald’s plot and planting trees each year to symbolise their ongoing support

They’re also excited to participate in fundraising events hosted by the hospice. In fact, Matt has kindly volunteered Mike to take on the Great North Run next year!

Green Acres are committed to enhancing the local environment and supporting our community. Sustainability is more than a buzzword – it’s a critical issue as we all face the challenges of climate change, carbon emissions, and waste. While large-scale changes are essential, they believe that individual actions play a crucial role too. Their Green Packages empower individuals and businesses on their journey to achieving TRUE NET Zero. They are committed to investing in the local community, such as supporting schools through educational visits. Now, they’re taking it a step further by extending our support to the Hospice.

When asked why Matt and Mike wanted to support the Hospice, they said:

“Both of us have had friends and family who’ve relied on the support of hospices, and we truly admire the incredible work they do. When we had the chance to visit St Oswald’s, we knew it was a cause we wanted to support.”

“Yes, we’re a business and we want to succeed, but were also driven by doing work that supports and helps our local community.”

Thank you so much to Green Acres for their support of our work.
