Ken has generously supported us for over thirty years, starting in the early 1990’s following in his mother’s footsteps, who volunteered in our charity shops. Later, his colleague Jean began fundraising for the hospice to give thanks for the care her mother received and having signed up for the Great North Run annually, the office rallied round to sponsor her. Ken also laced up his trainers and ran the London Marathon for us in 1994 and has continued to support us in many other ways, including donating to our shops and enjoying the art trails with his grandchildren.
A knowledgeable historian, Ken has been a volunteer guide at Segedunum Roman Fort since 1987 and worked with the Wallsend Local History Society for nearly forty years. This experience, alongside being a Newcastle City Guide, led Ken to write a number of local history books on Wallsend, Newcastle, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Seaton Sluice.
Over the years, Ken has given talks and guided walks on various local history topics to local groups and donated any fees received to St Oswald’s Hospice. Later, when he began to have books published, he continued his generosity by donating the royalties to local charities with St Oswald’s receiving the lion’s share.
“It is very satisfying to know that so much has been donated to help to support the hospice and hopefully this may encourage others to nominate St Oswald’s as their charity.”
Ken and wife Pauline were invited into the hospice to meet with fundraiser Karen and see how their generosity over the years has supported our patients and their families.
“My wife Pauline and I were privileged to be invited to have a look around the hospice recently and we were both impressed and amazed at how much it has changed since our last visits over 20 years ago. Not only have the buildings themselves been transformed and extended to provide a warm and friendly welcome to patients and their families, but the extensive range of medical and emotional help being offered on site and out in the community is staggering. All the staff and volunteers we met were helpful, committed, enthusiastic and caring.
“We also received lots of smiles from everyone we met, especially the children who see the hospice as a home from home with such great facilities and activities. We were delighted to meet the very enthusiastic ‘Clown Doctors’ during our visit who certainly brighten up the atmosphere wherever they go.”
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Ken, Pauline and family for their continued support and generosity to St Oswald’s Hospice over many years.
