After being blue lighted to hospital last month, Georgina was told she had lung sepsis, and it was recommended she was cared for the Hospice to receive holistic support. For the last four weeks Georgina has been treated on our Inpatient Unit and has praised the care and support she and her husband, Paul and their two children have received.
Georgina hopes that by talking about her illness she can highlight the importance of how recognising symptoms early can save lives.
Georgina said:
“I didn’t realise how much I needed hospice care until it was suggested by the Oncology Team looking after me. There are so many benefits to being at St Oswald’s Hospice – my husband, children, and other family members can all visit; the peaceful and tranquil environment; and the specialist staff who know exactly what I need.
“The Hospice is the perfect place for me to be cared for right now. Rather than being in hospital and analysing my condition, I can just be a patient, rather than a GP. The staff have changed my treatment plan which has improved my symptoms, meaning I now have a much better quality of life.”
Talking about the care provided by our teams, Georgina continued:
“The care is holistic and treats the whole person, and their family too. Just one of the benefits of being at St Oswald’s Hospice has been their amazing catering team. They cater for every need I have and are so kind and thoughtful, asking me what food they can tempt me with each day, and it’s all fresh, nutritious food that is made with love. It’s like a 5 star hotel!
“Being at the Hospice has meant that as a family we’re able to resume our normal roles and allows us to spend quality time together. We’ve had takeaway and games nights, and we were even able to have lunch with our extended family in the Hospice’s family room.
“As well as all the special memories, the Hospice is preparing us for the future. The Child Bereavement Lead at St Oswald’s is already working with my two children and the social workers have been supporting us too.”
Georgina’s husband, Paul, added:
“Georgina has always been a champion for holistic care and that’s what the care at St Oswald’s is. Now we’re at the Hospice I’m able to be a husband and a father. I don’t have to worry about being a full time carer and have the full time support of the multidisciplinary team behind me.”
Georgina ended:
“As a former GP, I’m passionate about diagnosing cancer as early as possible for patients. I want to encourage patients with new and persisting symptoms to seek help ASAP. Early diagnosis of cancer saves lives. It was too late for my symptoms but I want to raise awareness in the hope that I can help other people be cured rather than end up with an advanced, stage 4 diagnosis like me.”
