Machu Picchu Trek and Community Project
Experience the adventure of a lifetime by trekking the Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru and complete a local community project, whilst raising vital funds for St Oswald’s Hospice.
What is it?
In October/November 2020 you will jump on a flight to Peru and hike along the most scenic and diverse trail to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. The 10 day adventure will allow you to experience life as a Peruvian in remote villages, eating local delicacies, camping under the stars and trekking the famous Salkantay Trail used by the ancient Inca’s.
Taking a step into history you’ll immerse yourself into the mist, surrounding lush vegetation and steep escarpments around the ancient ruins.
You’ll reach for the stars, soaring to heights of 4600m and feel the immense satisfaction at the top of the pass where, on a clear day, you’ll be awarded with amazing views of the Salkantay and Huamantay mountains.
Before following an ancient and remote footpath where massive snow-capped mountains collide with lush tropical rain forests, you’ll spend two days completing a local community development project. Previous groups have repainted a school, helped repair a clinic and community centre, or created a vegetable garden. This time is invaluable for acclimatising to the altitude before starting the trek and you’ll get to experience the real Peru.
Why take part?
As well as embarking on an incredible adventure of a lifetime, you’ll be part of a team aiming to raise over £115,000 to support the work St Oswald’s Hospice carries out each day with adults, young adults, children and babies with incurable conditions.
