Joe from Dunston decided to join the volunteering team at St Oswald's Dunston shop to gain skills, confidence and experience to help get him back into work.
Joe is supporting St Oswald’s Retail Volunteer Recruitment week – a week long campaign to celebrate the charity’s team of retail volunteers and to promote the retail volunteering opportunities that the charity has available. Joe, who has been supporting St Oswald’s for over a year, spoke about his experiences as a volunteer.
Coming to St Oswald’s has been a great chance for me to learn new skills, gain qualifications, develop my confidence and to meet new people. Volunteering is something I look forward to doing and I enjoy coming to the shop each week. It’s a lovely team to work with, they really take you under their wing, give you as much support as you need and volunteering is just brilliant! I like the fact that volunteering at St Oswald’s is about what you get out as well as what you put in. Hopefully the skills I have picked up will go some way in helping me to get a full time paid job.
Andrew Moir, Head of Retail at St Oswald’s, said:
It’s been fantastic to watch Joe grow and develop over the past year. Through volunteering Joe has been able to develop a whole series of skills from customer service, till training, visual merchandise and the work he has done has gone a huge way in helping Joe to grow his confidence. Joe has put himself forward for various training programmes and has really made the most of his time at St Oswald’s developing skills and qualifications that will give his CV a big boost. We have a huge variety of specialist shops and volunteering roles at St Oswald’s, so we really do have enough variation to suit all ages, abilities and interests. We are always in need of more volunteers to support the important work of St Oswald’s and to help us raise money and awareness for the important work we do. Anybody interested can get in touch with us and we can organise for taster sessions to ensure you feel that volunteering is something you’re interested in.
