Sage's story

Following on from National Volunteers Week, St Oswald’s is hosting our own week-long Retail Volunteer Recruitment week campaign. The week celebrates our team of retail volunteers and promotes the diverse range of volunteering opportunities available including for corporate volunteers.

Over the past 12 months, the North East division of international software business Sage has been supporting St Oswald’s mainly by volunteering in our Central Sorting Centre which receives and organises the majority of our donated items and distributes goods to our 26 regional charity shops.

Sage’s volunteering is organised through their philanthropic arm, Sage Foundation, as part of their aim to help transform lives by investing time in the local community. The day serves as part of Sage colleagues’ five volunteer days a year - the equivalent of 2% of their time.

Debbie Wall, Head of the Sage Foundation, said:

Our colleagues look forward to the days they spend volunteering for St Oswalds, it’s a chance for them help the community they live and work in and St Oswalds always makes us feel so welcome. It’s great to know that 12 hours of volunteering helps to pay for half a day of nursing care. And I’m really proud that 85 of our Newcastle colleagues have been able to help out in the last year.

Andrew Moir, Head of Retail at St Oswald’s, said:

Sage has proved to be a fantastic support to St Oswald’s, particularly in our Central Sorting Centre in Benfield Business Park. Sage regularly deploys a small team of staff who spend the day volunteering with us. Whilst they’re with us they make a huge contribution to the running of the retail function of St Oswald’s which is critical in terms of income generation. Sage often use the days as team away days and have challenges and competitions with each other as to which colleague can sort through the most stock. As our Central Sorting Centre is the backbone to our entire retail operation, Sage volunteers make a massive difference when they support us and we’re hugely grateful for their time. We’re pleased that we can offer volunteers a variety of shops and volunteering roles to choose from and that we have plenty of innovative ways in which businesses are able to support us. We try and tailor the experience as much as possible to ensure that each volunteer gets as much out of the experience as possible.
