How long have you been with St Oswald’s Hospice and what roles have you held?
I’ve worked for St Oswald’s Hospice for just over 12 years. I started as a Support Manager and later progressed to Support Manager Lead. In that role, I led a team of seven Managers who supported and covered our retail shops. We also assisted with the Collection Line’s incoming calls and help list exciting items on eBay, helped in the central sorting area, and occasionally drove the vans.
What attracted you to your role in retail?
I was drawn to the variety of the role. There’s so much to do – from managing a shop to hosting events, and even collecting trees for the Tree Cycle. Every day brings something new, which has kept me motivated over the years.
Can you tell us more about your role in retail as SM Lead?
In my role as Support Manager Lead, I oversaw a very versatile team that supported the whole retail operation. The team covered everything from managing retail shops to working on eBay collection, sorting, and occasionally driving the vans. It was challenging at times but also incredibly rewarding. It required us to be adaptable to the varied needs of the retail team, and that’s something I really enjoyed.
What has been your favourite part of working with St Oswald’s?
The people, without a doubt – St Oswald’s Hospice is an amazing, caring, and happy place to work, and I’ve been lucky enough to work alongside so many wonderful people. I’m also incredibly proud to have been part of the Art Trails, from the Snow Dogs to Elmer, and most recently Shaun the Sheep. These are experiences I’ll always cherish.
What excites you most about joining the volunteering team?
After 12 years with St Oswald’s Hospice, I was ready for a new challenge. In my new role as Volunteering Recruitment and Development Officer, I’m thrilled to take on this fresh opportunity, while maintaining a close connection with the retail team.
“I’m looking forward to working alongside volunteers, being out in the community, and building strong relationships with schools, colleges, and universities. My role is to support the hospice as a whole, offering guidance and encouragement to volunteers while helping to grow our volunteer numbers to benefit the entire hospice community.”
How have you found the transition into the volunteering role so far?
I’ve officially transitioned into my new role, and so far, it’s been exciting! I’m enjoying the fresh challenges it brings, and I’m grateful that I can still stay connected to the retail team while working closely with our volunteers. It’s a new chapter, and one that I’m eager to embrace.
What qualities will you bring to your new role in volunteering?
After 12 years in retail, I’m excited to take on this new role, working closely with all departments across the hospice and supporting them too. With my wealth of experience, I’ll be able to engage with the community and encourage many new volunteers to join us. I’m excited to bring my passion and enthusiasm for St Oswald’s Hospice to this role.
