What attracted you to Lymphoedema as a profession?
I used to work as a district nurse, and it was a part of my role that I found particularly interesting. I also worked with patients who attended the Lymphoedema Service, and they all spoke very highly of St Oswald’s Hospice.
How long have you worked at St Oswald’s Hospice?
Six months.
Why did you apply for a role at St Oswald’s Hospice?
I wanted to work in a specialised setting, and I knew St Oswald’s Hospice offered expert care and a high standard of service.
Can you explain a bit about your role and what it involves?
My role involves treating patients with Lymphoedema and Lipoedema. This includes carrying out intensive treatments such as bandaging, reviewing patients to ensure they are optimising their treatment, and educating them on how to manage their condition effectively.
What do you think is the most important thing people should know about Lymphoedema?
With the right treatment, Lymphoedema and Lipoedema can be managed really well. Our service is here to support patients and help them live as comfortably as possible. A lot of people think hospice care is just for end-of-life, but it’s really about improving quality of life at every stage.”
What impact does the Lymphoedema Service have on patients?
The impact is incredibly positive, as there are very few services available for Lymphoedema patients in the North East. The Lymphoedema Service provides essential specialist support and gives patients somewhere to turn to for expert care.
Do you have any advice for someone recently diagnosed with Lymphoedema?
I would encourage newly diagnosed patients to see their management plan as a new way of life rather than a burden. Their condition can be managed in a way that works for them, and support is always available.
What does hospice care mean to you?
To me, hospice care is about improving patients’ quality of life and making a real difference to their wellbeing.
