Adrenaline junkies from Ryecroft Glenton, an accountancy firm based in Jesmond, Newcastle, raised an amazing £8,000 in aid of St Oswald’s Hospice after braving a zip-wire off the Tyne Bridge.
The zip wire is one of the 31 Days of Adventure offers from the Hospice’s Life List challenges which offers supporters once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as the Clarty Bairns obstacle course, Hadrian’s Wall Trek and Coast to Coast Cycle.
Alongside 30 other zip liners, 23 colleagues from the accountancy firm joined together to abseil the 295 metres from the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle. They chose to support St Oswald's as many of the team have had relatives cared for by the hospice, and they wanted to give something back in recognition of the excellent care their loved ones have received.
Deborah Graham, a partner at RG paid tribute to the courage of those who took part, given most had never been on a zip wire before.
They were all amazing. Some of the team were a little more reluctant than others but they still did it. It was certainly an experience to step off the side of the bridge and slide across the Tyne. I am thrilled to have done it, but I certainly won’t be rushing to try it again!
Fiona Hall from Ryecroft Glenton said:
I must say I am with Deborah’s comments, I absolutely loved the thrill of the zip wire but it scared me quite a bit, I was shaking like a leaf! There were one or two others (younger members of our firm) who said they would definitely do it again as they loved the buzz! Others described the experience as “unforgettable”!
We enjoy fundraising for St Oswald’s as it is close to a few hearts in the office, me included as my dad was cared for and died there 30 years ago. That is my main reason for helping to fundraise for you guys, as I know what a fantastic job you all do. I think the final amount we raised was £8,318 which we’re thrilled with.
