Our friends at Co-op’s Bedlington branch invited instore recently and we took the opportunity to say thank you for all the amazing work they’re doing through their membership scheme. Co-op UK’s members scheme is a little different to most, as every time a customer spends in their food stores a proportion is donated to their chosen charity.
When you sign up as a member, for £1 you get to choose a charity from a list of options, then every time you buy a Co-op branded product you can get 5% worth of points to spend and 1% goes towards your chosen charity. This is a perfect scheme for customers as they can support a charity whilst shopping at no extra cost.
Calum Abbott, Store Manager at Co-op Bedlington Station said:
It’s a really good scheme for our customers to join. We give back to local communities and local people can help without doing anything extra. Overall Co-op UK gave away over £19m to charities last year. In store we get a list of charities and we ask the staff members to vote for their top three. We then push the final three out for the public, to vote for who they would like to support.
We support each charity for 12 months and it’s a great way to meet local people and make good connections within the community, and anything to benefit the local community is important to us and this is such an easy way to do that.
Lizzie James, Fundraiser at St Oswald’s added:
It was lovely popping into the Bedlington Store, thank you to Calum for inviting us, and also Angi & Linda from the Netherton Lane store and Funeral Care for coming along too. It was lovely meeting everyone but also lovely meeting the local community and hearing about their amazing stories and relationships with the Hospice. Raising £765.47 is incredible and we honestly can’t thank you enough! We look forward to seeing the final total in a few months.
