What a weekend! Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September saw hundreds of adults and children take to the streets of our region in their St Oswald's t shirts and vests to represent the hospice in the Mini, Junior and Great North Run events. We were humbled and overwhelmed with the support from people of all ages and abilities who gave it everything to raise funds in support of our work.
Saturday's Mini and Junior Great North Runs were brilliant as ever, as we welcomed hundreds of young athletes to the Quayside. Our 'greeting area' on the Quayside Seaside was a hive of activity as we wished our runners luck and congratulated them after the race. We want to say a big thank you to our volunteers for their hard work on the day and the team from Better Leisure for giving our runners a hero's welcome and sponsoring their t-shirts. Thanks you also to NE1 for hosting our team at the Quayside Seaside - it was lovely to have a place for everyone to get together on a very busy Quayside.
The main event on Sunday was just as special, as hundreds of supporters came together to take on the 13.1 mile challenge - and we were there to welcome them home. Our tent in the charity village was manned by staff and volunteers and we ensured all runners arrived back to huge applause.
Our volunteer massage therapists were on hand to ease aches and pains and our army of volunteers ensured that all runners got some much needed refreshment. Thanks go out to My Health Clinic who sponsored our running vests and to Asda for sending along some of their team in support.
Thank you to Marks and Spencer Silverlink, Asda Heaton, Greggs, Hutchinsons Catering, Morrisons Byker, Starbucks Sunderland, Geordie Baker, Ringtons, Glaceau Water, Tropical Wholefoods and Bobby’s for providing snacks and drinks to our runners. Our own hospice kitchen served up pasta which was very well received.
Thank you to the massage therapists and physios who gave their time to help east sore muscles and to our fab team on our 6.3 mile cheering point for giving the runners a much needed boost. The wonderful Ofuobi Men's Cultural Group, part of the NDI Igbo North East England, were on hand to provide music to spur the team on.
But most of all, thanks to Team St Oswald's 2019 - you are all amazing!
On behalf of all the staff, volunteers, patients, children and families at St Oswald's, we'd like to say a huge WELL DONE and THANK YOU to each and every runner as well as the people who generously sponsored you. The Great North Run is a vital part of our fundraising calendar and you have made sure that once again, it was a huge success.
