Henry Colbeck fries up a feast for St Oswald’s

Henry Colbeck, the oldest independent supplier to the Fish and Chip market in the North East, held their Fish and Chip Race Night in aid of St Oswald’s, raising an impressive £1817.65.

Henry Colbeck put on a race night at the local racecourse every few years as a thank you to their customers and their suppliers. The evening is renowned for being a great evening for people to network and share ideas within the industry.

We caught up with Douglas Colbeck, Company Director, to find out about the success of the evening.

It was a wonderful evening which gave us the opportunity to show our appreciation to our customers. We usually do a lunchtime event but this is our first year of switching to an evening event and it was definitely more successful. It’s a great way for everyone in the industry to get together, have a laugh and share ideas with each other. Our suppliers help us out considerably, the whole evening is free for our customers, they even get a meal and their race ticket included. The evening had a relaxed tone and I think that was reflected in the contributions we received for the Hospice. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the total, I thought it was great! We’re a local business which started in 1893 and we’ve always supported the local community.  St Oswald’s isn’t far from where I live, my wife often visits the gift shop in the Hospice to buy a few small things. I think it’s important to support local charities and we’re happy that we can make a difference to St Oswald’s.

Helen Alderson, Senior Fundraiser at St Oswald’s commented:

It was a fantastic event to be a part of and I was pleased to have been invited to sell raffle tickets and to take contributions on the night. It was fantastic to see how generous people were being and the atmosphere had such a relaxed feel, it was incredible! I can’t give enough credit to Douglas and everyone at Henry Colbeck for putting on such a wonderful evening. At St Oswald’s we need to raise £7.5m a year through charitable giving to keep our doors open and to continue to provide high quality care to our patients and their families. Events such as the Fish and Chip race night are perfect for raising money for St Oswald’s.
