It’s been a football crazy weekend but boy, have we loved it. The third annual Pavel Cup took part this Sunday the 8th July in remembrance of Newcastle United goalkeeper, Pavel Srnicek and raised an incredible £3500. The day saw the Newcastle Legends squad take on celebrities in a charity football match to raise money for St Oswald’s, a charity close to Pavel’s heart.
Still on a high from England qualifying the evening before, hundreds of football fans gathered at Dunston UTS stadium in Gateshead to watch some familiar faces fight it out on the pitch to see who could lift the trophy. Peter Beardsley, Steve Howey and Olivier Bernard were a few faces to be spotted signing autographs, taking selfies and having a great day socialising with fans.
The matched finished 7-4 with the Legends lifting the cup after a thrilling 90 minutes. The Pavel Cup is a great family day out with food, raffles, tombolas, game stalls, inflatable bowling and bird displays to keep the crowd entertained – oh and the actual match of course. We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who turned up to support, play and volunteer throughout the day.
Peter Beardsley, Newcastle Legend said:
Pav was special, he was an amazing man, an amazing friend and an amazing goalkeeper, anything he did for the North East was special and that’s shown today by everyone who’s turned up. The amount of people who have ‘Pavel is a geordie’ on their t-shirts today is incredible, he’ll never be forgotten. It’s great to remember him in this way supporting a charity that was close to him.
Steve Harper, Newcastle Legend added:
Pavel was wonderful, he was a huge help to me when I was a young goalkeeper. He meant a lot to the people of Newcastle and they meant a lot to him. It’s great to come along to play today, or manage, remembering him and raising money for such a great cause.
Siobhan Sargeant, Business Partnerships Manager at St Oswald’s said:
It was an incredible day at the Pavel Cup, I’ve really enjoyed myself and I can see everyone else has too. We can’t thank Steve Wraith enough organising such a lovely event to raise money for us. Also, big thanks to the people at Namco Funscape and Riverside Falconry for coming along with their inflatable bowling alley and birds of prey. We’re so happy with the amount raised and we can’t wait for next year’s event!
