Join us in walking together in memory our loved ones this summer

We are excited and pleased to announce a brand new fundraising event taking place this summer, inviting people to come together to remember those who were special to them.

The Lantern Walk will see hundreds of people gather together at Newcastle Racecourse on Saturday 9th July. Each holding a paper lantern, the walkers will light the way along the 5k course, as the sun sets, in memory of their loved ones.

The fundraising event is sponsored by The Cooperative Funeralcare and follows on from our successful Midnight Walk events held in recent years. Participants aged 12 and over can register to take part and will receive a St Oswald’s t shirt, lantern and battery operated candle. They are asked to aim to raise £100 each towards our work, through donations in memory of the person they are remembering, or through sponsorship from friends and family.

Emma Wrightson, 30, from Newcastle has already signed up to the Lantern Walk, and will be taking part in memory of her two-year-old niece, Aoife, who died at St Oswald’s in 2008.

Emma said:

“Visiting Aoife at St Oswald’s completely changed my view of Hospices, I thought they were a place for old people, but the Children’s Hospice is a really happy place. I started fundraising when Aoife was at St Oswald’s because of the care she had received, and how amazing the staff were, even after Aoife died.

“Every year I would take part in the Midnight Walk, so I was sad when St Oswald’s stopped running the event. A group of us, including family and friends, took part – we called ourselves Aoife’s Angels. Over the years, we have raised over £18,000 for the Hospice though a range of events, including the fundraising walks. The walk was an opportunity for family and friends to get together and spend some time remembering Aoife.

“This year, our friends and family are taking part in the Lantern Walk in memory of Aoife. For anyone thinking of signing up to the Lantern Walk I would say that it’s a great opportunity for everyone, young and old, to spend time together and look back at happy times.”

Registration for The Lantern Walk is open now, with an early bird special offer of £13 per adult. Children aged 12-15 can register for £10.  Participants can book their place online at www/stoswaldsuk.org/lantern-walk, call 0191 246 9123 or email fundraising@stoswaldsuk.org
