St Oswald’s Hospice’s Life List challenges are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that range from cycling to mountain climbing. Whilst many of our Life List participants take on a challenge to smash their own personal goals, many more choose to sign up in groups for that extra motivation and for team support. Whether you’re a group of friends, relatives or colleagues, why not complete a Life List adventure together?
Newcastle-based accountants, Leathers the Accountants, have decided to do exactly that. Six employees have signed up to complete the London to Paris Cycle challenge, which sees participants cycle on average 75km a day through France’s rural landscapes and quaint villages until they reach the final destination of the Eiffel Tower.
This is no easy challenge, but as Leathers have found out, you don’t have to be an avid cyclist to take part.
Heather Newton, Secretary and Administrative Assistant said:
As a company we really enjoy being involved with charitable projects and we’re proud of the fact that we’ve been able to help St Oswald’s with fundraising in the past. Many people in the office have a close connection to the Hospice through the support and care that’s been given to family members. So, we wanted to do something even bigger and even harder this year to help in the best way we can!
Through cycling challenges of previous years, Leathers have become known for being the accountants who cycle! The London to Paris cycling challenge seemed like the perfect opportunity to fundraise for the Hospice.
There is a wide range of abilities taking part – some of the guys are veterans of the Tour de Force (cycling stages of the Tour de France), and others are only just buying bikes. Everyone is genuinely excited and although some of the newcomers to cycling are a little nervous, the experienced cyclists are passing on their knowledge, that’s the benefit of doing the ride as a team. Once the weather picks up in the spring, we’ll all be going out on group rides together.
Personally, I don’t think I realised the extent of what I had signed up for until I went out on my first ride a few weeks ago! It’ll be tough but it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something amazing and raise money for a fantastic cause.
Zoe Lawson, Manager at Leathers the Accountants added:
St Oswalds is a charity which I’ve supported personally for a number of years so to get the opportunity to fundraise as part of the team here at Leathers is something I couldn’t miss.
We’re still in the early stages but we’re really making progress in terms of organising fundraising events to make sure we can generate as much money as possible for the Hospice. Plans are still being finalised but we’re looking at things like comedy nights, pub quizzes, and charity dinners, amongst smaller events like cake sales, dress down days and coffee mornings. Hopefully the fun of the all the events will make all the hard miles on the bike worth it!
The JustGiving page is up and running, and has been shared around our social media platforms; donations have started to come in but we can always do more. All of the team, even those who aren’t cycling, have really embraced the challenge; their support is invaluable and everyone is so excited to be involved.
Completing one of our Life List challenges is a great way to tick something off your bucket list - and if you do it with a group, then the support from your teammates makes it that little bit easier.
