The evening of Tuesday 18th December saw our Newcastle Light up a Life service take place at Newcastle’s Metro Arena. Hundreds of supporters came joined in in song, prayer and reflection, in memory of their loved ones and to date, the campaign has raised over £105,000 for St Oswald’s.
The event was brilliantly hosted by our Chaplain Davina Radford and featured speeches from two supporters who have experienced the care of St Oswald’s first-hand, when their loved ones stayed on our Adult Inpatient Unit. Alan Thornton and Claire Lisle shared some very poignant and moving words, which really set the tone for a special evening.
The lights on our tree were beautifully lit by Rosie Lisle and her best friend Robyn Thirlaway. Aged just 7, they were not a bit fazed and proudly announced to the audience that they were there to remember their Auntie Jenny, Rosie’s Granny Linda and Robyn’s Grandma Joan. You can see the moment the tree was lit here
There was also a rousing rendition of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer by the children in the audience, who were invited up on stage. And the evening ended with a festive classic, White Christmas, made all the more beautiful by the audience holding their illuminated phones in the air as they sang.
A big thank you to everyone involved in making the event a success and to those who supported the campaign by making a donation in memory.
Thank you to Co-op Funeralcare who sponsored Light up a Life and helped out on the night, to Urban Chorus, Newcastle Concert Band and Robson’s Choice for providing music and song, to THC Landscapes for our gorgeous tree, Midnight Electronics for sound and lighting, Jeff Huntley Plant Ltd, Buildbase Gateshead, Hillheads Farm Shop and to Joy Calvert and the Metro Radio Arena Staff. And of course, thank you to our own staff and volunteers who made the event possible.
If you were unable to come or wish to listen again, the service will be broadcast by Radio Tyneside 93.6FM on Sunday 23rd December at 5.00pm.
