At St Oswald’s we know that it’s often not just the patient who needs support, but the whole family. Our Family Support Team, made up of Bereavement Support Workers and Social Workers, provides support when families need it most.
We met Beth Iveson and her son Alfie, aged 9, last year after Alfie’s Dad was diagnosed with incurable cancer. Alfie’s dad Richard died in June 2017 and our Bereavement Team continue to support Alfie. Beth said:
“St Oswald’s has a special place in my heart, what they do is mind-blowing. I honestly don’t know where we’d be right now if it wasn’t for the support of the Bereavement Team. Beth from their team specialises in children’s bereavement and I can’t shout enough about how much she has helped Alfie.
“I can’t believe something like this happened to us as you never think it will, but it’s been bittersweet. I’d do anything for this last year not to have happened, but then I never would have met everyone at the Hospice, made some great friends and found out about the incredible work they do.”
Beth and Alfie continue to fundraise for us, with Alfie taking on the Junior Great North Run for a second year, and Beth and a group of ‘Alfie’s Angels’ running the Great North Run in aid of us.
