St Oswald's hosts special ceremonies for Volunteers' Week

St Oswald’s recently hosted a long-service awards ceremony and a special cream tea to honour our volunteers as part of our celebration of Volunteers Week.

Volunteers Week, which is being held between the 1st and 7th June, is a nationwide campaign which recognises the contribution that millions of volunteers make in the UK. Across Britain, more than 125,000 volunteers generously give their free time to support hospice care in a variety of ways. At St Oswald’s, we have a team of over 1,200 volunteers who work at the hospice and who support us within the community too. From retail assistants, ward helpers, events ambassadors, through to drivers and catering assistants, every department within St Oswald’s receives huge support from volunteers.

Majorie Dalgarno, a fundraising volunteer received her 10 year badge at the ceremony. Majorie said:

I feel a lot of goodness by volunteering in the fundraising team and I’m grateful I can help out. I get involved in all sorts of things, from getting out and about with collection tins, to spreading messages about the Hospice by word of mouth. Being an ambassador for St Oswald’s is about letting people know what the Hospice is about and how it’s grown.

Yvonne Storey, a keen volunteer and fundraiser for St Oswald’s said:

Volunteering with St Oswald’s has given me a new lease of life. I have had the chance to take part in all sorts of exciting challenges and events such as Mad March Mare, and I’ve signed up for the Sahara Trek next year. I would highly recommend to anyone who has even just an hour or two free each week to seriously considering volunteering with St Oswald’s. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my short time with the Hospice and hope to enjoy many more years.

James Ellam, Chief Executive at St Oswald’s, said:

Volunteers' Week provides us with a fantastic excuse to throw a celebration in honour of our brilliant team of volunteers. The week also allows us to reflect on the amazing contribution that our 1,200 volunteers make to the Hospice. Without them, we simply wouldn’t be able to deliver the high quality of care that we do. We’re constantly in awe of the passion and dedication our volunteers demonstrate and we rely on them hugely 365 days of the year.
