St Oswald’s are on the lookout for new volunteer hairdressers to pamper their patients.
Day Hospice Services at St Oswald’s are open three days a week and offer daytime support and nursing care to patients with incurable conditions. There are a range of activities on offer to the patients during the day including; arts and crafts, relaxation sessions and hair and beauty treatments.
St Oswald’s relies on volunteer hairdressers to provide hair, beauty and pamper sessions to the patients, but currently only have one hairdresser who regularly volunteers at the Day Hospice.
Jenny Booth, who currently volunteers as a hairdresser at St Oswald’s, said:
As a busy single mum and a self-employed hairdresser, I was concerned that I wouldn’t have time to volunteer but I soon found that sparing just two hours a week was enough to make an enormous difference to the patients.
Having sadly experienced cancer within my own family and having lost a young relative, I was passionate about using my skills to support a fantastic local charity and to give back to the community. St Oswald’s values my time and I’m in awe of the nurses who do the most amazing job. Despite the serious nature of the Hospice, St Oswald’s is an incredibly positive place to visit and I gain a huge amount from spending such a small amount of time making the patients feel special. I provide various treatments to patients including; cuts, washes and blow-drys and considering the serious and long-term illnesses many of the patients are suffering from, being pampered and spoilt with something as simple as a haircut hugely lifts their spirits. I’ve been with St Oswald’s now for over 6 months and massively enjoy my role. By giving a little, you can gain a lot!
Christine Ward, Volunteer Services Manager at St Oswald’s, said:
We’re so grateful to Jenny and all of our volunteers for supporting St Oswald’s and putting their skills to good use. We’ve received fantastic feedback from our patients about the work Jenny does and we know how much they look forward to her coming into the Hospice each week. As a charity, we rely on the dedication of over 1,200 regular volunteers who support us throughout our Hospice and our shops. As we have 4 times more volunteers than staff, volunteers really are the lifeblood of our Hospice and without them, we simply couldn’t provide the high levels of care and support that our patients and their families receive. We urgently need more volunteers like Jenny to help support our Day Hospice services and we look forward to hearing from people who may be interested in the position.
If you or somebody you know is a qualified hairdresser with a few hours to spare on a regular basis, St Oswald’s would love to hear from you. Contact our Volunteer Department on 0191 246 9125 or email: email@example.com to find out more.
