Stars name their 'Dream Teams' for St Oswald's

We are so excited to launch our very own Fantasy Football League for the upcoming Premiership season – and it seems we aren’t the only ones! Stars from the world of music have shown their support to our brand new ‘Charity Fantasy Football’ campaign by choosing their own dream teams, and they didn’t let the fact many of their players aren’t footballers get in the way!

Our league is open to anyone – players sign up for just £10 and manage a team of Premier League footballers, earning points for how well they play in real matches throughout the season. The team with the most points at the end of the season wins a £1,000 jackpot, with spot prizes and the best team name accolade also up for grabs. All funds raised will help our specialist team care for local adults, young people, children and babies with incurable conditions.

Using a bit of creative license, pop stars Alexandra Burke, Aston Merrygold, Gareth Gates and S Club’s Jo O’Meara chose their squads – and their players include not only professional footballers but some of their friends from the entertainment industry.

Soccer Aid stalwart Gareth Gates, who performed at Newcastle Pride this summer, selected a team of legends including David Seaman “because he’s a good friend of mine,” Lionel Messi, Pele and Leeds player Tony Yeboah, “one of the greatest strikers of all time.” He also included Sol Campbell - “one of the greatest defenders and he’s huge” - and Cristiano Ronaldo, “because he’s one of the game’s greats, although he’d have to argue with Beckham for the free kicks.”

Bending it like Beckham on Jo O’Meara’s team were the other six members of  S Club, along with Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Lee from 911 and Brian McFadden, while both Aston and Alexandra opted to have Olly Murs on their teams.

Alexandra’s other dream signings included Robbie Williams, Usain Bolt, Seal, Alfie Boe and Michael Ball, while Aston chose football freerunners Jezza and Billy, footballers Jesse Lingard and Tony Adams and rapper Stormzy. “I’d also put myself in the team,” he said, “and I’d have Justin Bieber, in goal.”
