A Gosforth woman is celebrating after scooping the top prize not once, but twice in three weeks, by playing the St Oswald’s lottery.
Sue Ayre, 64 from Gosforth has been playing our lottery for over 20 years, winning occasional small prizes of £10. But her luck was really in this summer, as she scooped the £1000 on two occasions within a month.
I’ve always supported charities and I supported the original appeal that was launched to help build the Hospice back in the 1980’s. I felt it was vital to have a hospice for the people in the region, as you never know when you or those you love will need the support.
I joined the lottery not long after it began and saw it as my way of giving a regular donation towards the work of the Hospice. My family also support it in other ways, such donating clothes to their charity shops.
When the letter telling me I had won first came through the door, I assumed it would just be a newsletter or something. I couldn’t believe it when I opened it to find a cheque for £1,000! I was ecstatic and told my husband straight away.
We didn’t know what to spend it on, but thought a holiday might be nice. We love having short breaks away with Prague being one of our favourite destinations, so thought about booking a trip with my winnings. I’m actually having chemotherapy at the moment so want to wait for that to finish in December. It’ll be good to see how fit I’m feeling and base our plan around that.
Three weeks later I got another call from the Hospice. It was nice to hear from them and we were just chatting about my previous win when they gave me the exciting news. I’d only gone and won another £1000! I honestly couldn’t believe it, I was speechless. I’ve supported the Hospice all these years and it was such a shock but so lovely to win. We’re definitely going to go away now and celebrate our win and celebrate the end of my chemotherapy.
My mum is in her 90’s and uses the Lymphoedema Clinic at St Oswald’s. She loves going there and she’s so lucky to be able to. Knowing that our donations and support helps with all services in the hospice, not just end of life care, is a great feeling. The Hospice supports people of all ages with such a range of conditions and provides a life-line to so many in the region, playing the lottery is a simple way to show support – and as I have proven, you have a chance of getting something back.
Every week, players of St Oswald’s Hospice Lottery can win prizes of £1000, £100, 10 chances to win £10 and a weekly rollover of £500 hitting heights of £10,000. It costs just for only £2 per play per week and you are 600 times more likely to win the jackpot than if you play the National Lottery.
All profits from the lottery support the work we with local adults, young people, children and babies with serious, life-limiting conditions.
