The Mad March Mare is one of the toughest 10k runs around, and will see you ascend and descend over 500 metres, battle through wooded areas, climb up and down huge ravines, go head to head with the Northumbrian weather, fight against the chill of freezing water and attack the famous Hexham muddy racecourse.
Each year a team of proud supporters take on this adventurous obstacle course to raise money for St Oswald’s Hospice. In 2019, we had our biggest ever team take on the challenge with over 30 supporters getting muddy for a good cause.
We caught up with friends Adam and Liam who completed the course together. Liam said:
I saw the course advertised and wanted to take part as I love challenging myself and rolling around in the mud. I got drenched at the beginning, which made it harder, but it was a lot more fun!
“Completing it with Adam was great, the course was varied with lots of different obstacles and it really helped to have someone with you. There was a big teamwork element – as were not the most athletic – but helping each other get over walls and obstacles was lots of fun, and we definitely weren’t doing it for the time element!
I liked the fact the course had a lot of natural obstacles, it looked a bit different to the other ones around. I really enjoyed the course too, such a mixture of obstacles and the terrain is constantly changing through the trees and fields.
It was a big help having someone with you, when I was knackered it was good to have Liam there pushing me on. The medal at the end, tea and biscuits were definitely worth the effort!
