In 2012 our short break service extended to care for young adults aged 18-25. Previously we had cared for children up to the age of 18. This has led us to campaign for better health and social care for children who are transitioning in to adulthood.
That same year we published a report called 'Living longer than you thought I would' with support from Marie Curie Cancer Care Young People and Transition Programme. The report aimed to better understand the situation, needs and aspirations of young people with life limiting conditions who are growing into adulthood.
The young adults using our service benefit from increased independence and peer support. We plan stays so that young adults benefit from one another’s company, and more than that, the young adults often see our staff as friends.
