Stamfordham Young Farmers (SYF) are one of 10 Young Farmers Clubs in the Northumberland area, with all members aged from 11 to 26 years old. The SYF meet up on a regular basis to socialise, fundraise and plan for the year ahead. We caught up with some of the members to find out how they have been supporting St Oswald’s.
Stuart Carr, Rally Chairman said:
One of our friends recently died at the Hospice only a few months ago so it was a no brainer to support the hospice. We usually sit down to discuss what charities we’d like to support through the Annual Rally and when someone mentioned St Oswald’s we found a few people had had friends, family and colleagues use their services.
The Annual Rally is where all the Young Farmer groups get together in Northumberland and compete against each other in different events such as; flower arranging, tug of war, entertainment, drama, cooking, woodwork and many more. We then raise the money through being sponsored, by selling food and drink and then to buy tickets to attend.
Joanna Harrison, Rally Secretary added:
The entertainment and drama is my favourite, each group of Young Farmers get together and put on a show, a pantomime or sing. It’s great to see what people do, it’s such a good laugh. The Rally is the best day of the year, it brings everyone together and it lets you meet other young farmers from across the region, you really make some lifelong friends from people you may only see once a year.
We also raise money through holding a race night before the rally. We go quite old school with it and have a wind up version, so the people have to physically wind the horses to make them move and people can bet on those. It gets extremely competitive but is so much fun.
This year the Stamfordham Young Farmers have donated £3000 to local causes this year. This is split equally between their three chosen charities, which are; St Oswald’s Hospice, the Air Ambulance and Stamfordham Village Hall, who host their weekly meetings throughout the year.

Lizzie James, Fundraiser at St Oswald’s Hospice added:
It was great to meet Stu and Joanna before the meeting to find out a little more about why they chose to support St Oswald’s. Being invited to their AGM was lovely and it was so nice to see all the young farmers there and finding out how they all get involved in fundraising. It was clear to see how many people the work the Hospice does had touched.
I would like to say a huge thank you for choosing to support us, and behalf of everyone at the Hospice, thank you and good luck for next year’s rally!
