With medical school interviews imminent, an opportunity was created for volunteers to attend a session with Hospice consultant Jo Brown. The session aimed to give something back to volunteers for all of their hard work at the Hospice, to help them feel more prepared about what to expect, and what the universities might be looking for in a prospective doctor.
Jo and Fran Timson (Speciality Doctor) led the session on Teams with four Lymphoedema and Ward Helper volunteers. Answering questions that volunteers had submitted and responding to others asked in the session, Fran and Jo facilitated a thorough, detailed, and inspiring session. As well as giving clear advice and guidance on how to manage an interview and the qualities needed to be a doctor, they gave an honest account of the rewards and challenges of the career for volunteers to consider.
Lizzie Spencer, Volunteer Coordinator (Lymphoedema Service) said:
“It was great to link up with Hospice doctors Jo and Fran and make use of their rich experience and medical knowledge for volunteer’s benefit. The support and guidance in this form really enriches the experience volunteers have at the Hospice and supports them in their exciting next steps into medicine. We are grateful for Jo and Fran’s time and hope we can do something similar in future!”
Muneera Ali, Lymphoedema and Ward Helper Volunteer said:
“Just wanted to say that today’s session was extremely useful and helpful. Thank you to Jo for the session, I really appreciate it.”
