This week is Student Volunteering Week and we caught up with Flora who has been a Communications and Marketing Volunteer with us since last September.
Flora is currently in her second year of sociology at Newcastle University and as part of a career development module is hoping to gain invaluable work experience with us.
Flora said:
“After a close family friend died in a hospice last summer, I felt compelled to get involved with a similar organisation.
“I’m excited to see how the team function and what their roles entail as it will hopefully give me a better idea of what I would want to do in the future.
“I haven’t been volunteering at the Hospice very long however, I’ve been helping with social media posts and internal communications – whilst seeing what the team get up to in their day-to-day roles.
Flora continued:
“The benefits of being a volunteer whilst being a student is the fact that it is so rewarding and also a great way to connect and feel a part of the local community, which I feel is important when living in a different city as you do at University. I also think the experience is extremely helpful for the future as you get to know your own strengths and weaknesses in the workplace, as well as what you enjoy.
“The team at St Oswald’s Hospice are very welcoming and supportive. Despite the seriousness of the work, all members of staff are optimistic and are really passionate about what they do.
“I would certainly recommend that other people volunteer with St Oswald’s Hospice. It’s a very prominent charity in the Newcastle area, which helps so many families in the community and raises a life-changing amount of money.”
At St Oswald’s Hospice we offer vital care and support to patients with a range of life-limiting conditions.
As a volunteer you’ll play an important role that will help us raise the funds we need to keep our hospice doors open for patients across the North-East.
